Winans had no monopoly on novel designs. Other mavericks such
as the Camden and Amboy Railroad's John Stevens roamed the tracks.
Several sister locomotives based on the same English design were
built between 1849 and 1853. All were remodeled on more conventional
lines after a few years' service. (Scientific American Supplement,
