This unusual friction drive locomotive was built to the patented design of Eugene Fontaine in 1881 by the Grant Locomotive Works for the Canada Southern Railroad. After an unsuccessful career as a demonstrator the engine was rebuilt along conventional lines for the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad. (Recent Locomotives, Fig. 48)
