THE FAMOUS HORSESHOE CURVE ABOVE ALTOONA

Beyond Altoona, on the railway line from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh, the train gradually ascends to the summit of the Alleghenies. At Kittaning Point the line is carried around the famous Horseshoe Curve, where it crosses two ravines on a lofty embankment and cuts away the promontory dividing them. As the sides of the curve are parallel, trains which are seen to be moving in the same direction on opposite sides of the curve are actually bound for different terminals.
